A wedding venue in a village near Thrissur, in central Kerala.
Set in a beautiful village against a verdant rural landscape, the spaces at Neelambari blend themselves with the nature around them. There are several, indoor and outdoor, and they suit functions of quite different tones.
The venues
Three spaces, each of them really several
None of the three is a single room. Each is a cluster of connected areas — indoors, courtyard, lawn, water — booked together, so a function can move between them as the day goes on instead of sitting in one place.
Koothambalam
200–250 on the lawn
A temple theatre in the traditional style, with the Nalukettu (courtyard open to the sky) adjoining it for dining and the front lawn wrapped around both. Ceremonies and engagements indoors, dinner in the courtyard, the evening out on the grass — the three are contiguous and booked as one.
Jaalam
500–600 under the canopy
A covered green space for the larger functions, creeper-grown overhead so it holds up in sun or rain. Around it sit the pond, a traditional gatehouse that doubles as an open-air stage, and a park with a tree house that tends to get used for the haldi and the sangeet.
Puzhayoram
Smaller gatherings
Puzhayoram means riverside, and it is exactly that: two tree houses looking over the water. The smallest of the three and the quietest, and the one where a boat can bring somebody in.
The rest of it
What comes with the ground
Nine rooms in the traditional style, two of them tree houses by the river, for the family closest to the event, with more arranged at properties nearby when the party is larger. A laterite-lined pond, a yoga hall above the Koothambalam, a spa built in the shape of a country boat, and a canoe on the river. Parking for about a hundred cars, under trees.
If your guests are coming from outside Kerala, an evening of Kathakali or Koodiyattam in the Koothambalam is the thing most often asked for, and the easiest for us to arrange.
Getting here
Rural, but not remote
Kochi International Airport is 42 kms away and is usually an hour's drive. Thrissur railway station is 13 kms. Two national highways pass within a short distance, which is mostly what matters when a few hundred people are arriving on the same morning.
